Since November 1978, the Bannister Gallery at Rhode Island College has been in continuous operation, presenting a yearly calendar of 6-8 exhibitions of contemporary art by local, regional, and internationally renowned artists. The gallery was named after Edward Mitchell Bannister, a notable nineteenth-century African American artist, who lived in
Providence and was a founding member of the Providence Art Club. Bannister Gallery also manages over 500 permanent collection artworks for Rhode Island College.
