Cuttyhunk Historical Society & The Museum of the Elizabeth Islands
Founded in 1978, the Cuttyhunk Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the traditions, records and history of the Elizabeth Islands. The Society owns and operates the Museum of the Elizabeth Islands, a seasonal, cultural museum located on the island of Cuttyhunk, an hour’s boat ride from New Bedford, MA. Visitors are drawn to the island for its fishing, unparalleled vistas, and simple way of life. Each summer, the museum examines the rich history of the area through vibrant and engaging exhibits, which is brought to life by our dedicated island docents and staff. Recent exhibits have explored Cuttyhunk’s discovery in 1602, the fishing boom of the late 1800’s, the wintery isolation of today’s island life and much more. Numerous educational programs for both children and adults, speakers and walking tours, and a twice-summer model boat regatta held in the Cuttyhunk Pond, round out our summer schedule. Our library and collection provide a wealth of information for visitors and scholars alike and our small gift shop boasts locally-focused literature and treasures. Additionally, CHS is a partner in the preservation of the Tarpaulin Cove Lighthouse on Naushon Island.
