The recipient of a Trip Advisor 2016 Certificate of Excellence, the Florence Griswold Museum has been called a “Giverny in Connecticut” by the Wall Street Journal, and a “must-see” by the Boston Globe. In addition to the restored Florence Griswold House, the Museum features a gallery for changing art exhibitions, education and landscape centers, a restored artist’s studio, thirteen acres along the Lieutenant River, and extensive gardens. Our seasonal Café Flo was recognized as “best hidden gem” and “best outdoor dining” by Connecticut Magazine.

Visitors to this National Historic Landmark appreciate its appeal to the artists who fell upon the lovely shoreline town and stayed at the famed boarding house of Florence Griswold in the early 1900s. Walking the thirteen acres of grounds, one is greeted by the same specimen trees, broad fields, and gentle bend in the river. You can stand at the site of Childe Hassam’s favorite spot and glimpse the past in William Chadwick’s original studio. Stroll Miss Florence’s old-fashioned garden and image the artists with their easels, capturing on canvas the very site before you. Discover for yourself why it has been said that the setting “was only waiting to be painted.” Overlooking the Lieutenant River an art gallery awaits exploration. The Museum has one of the foremost collections of Impressionism in America and offers changing exhibitions of American art dating from the 18th through the early 20th centuries.
