Leffingwell House Museum
The Leffingwell House Historic Museum was built in 1675 as a two room structure that was expanded into a gentleman's townhouse. The Leffingwell house was saved it from demolition by the Society of the Founders of Norwich who moved it to its current site in 1959 and operate it as an historic museum. We archive and display artifacts prior to the founding of Norwich in 1659, through the 1776 Revolution and the Civil War. The house incorporates 17th- and 18th-century architecture, showing the development from a 17th-century pre-Revolutionary tavern into a mid-18th-century townhouse. Gen. George Washington visited Col. Christopher Leffingwell at the house during the Revolutionary War, seeking provisions and supplies for the Continental Army. Utensils, tools, furnishings, silver, and china of the period are displayed. Interpreters evoke the independent spirit and lifestyle of early Americana. Open Saturdays, 11am-4pm, April-October and by appointment. Admission: $5.00 adults; $3.00 seniors and children.
