The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, which opened on December 12, 2019 features the most comprehensive collection of gems and minerals unearthed in Maine and among the world’s foremost meteorite collections—including the largest piece of the Moon on Earth and the oldest known igneous rock in the solar system.

The museum comprises 15,000 square feet on three floors and is home to 40,000 gems and minerals and 6,000 meteorites. Highlights include more pieces of the Moon than the 10 largest natural history museums in the world combined; two dozen interactive exhibits; exotic specimens of the planet Mars; historic mineral collections such as the Perham Collection that has been on view in Maine for 90 years; 250 specimens of fossils; more than 1,000 polished spheres; nearly 400 mining-related artifacts, and an array of beautiful jewelry showpieces. The museum also contains a library comprised of 10,000 books, periodicals, maps and recordings primarily on the minerals and geology of Maine, as well as a laboratory unparalleled in scope for a museum of its size.
