Skyline Farm Carriage Museum
After Ken Sowles purchased Skyline Farm in 1970, he envisioned creating a museum featuring his beautiful collection of horse-drawn carriages and sleighs where people could learn about the vehicles typically seen in New England during the carriage era from the late 18th century to the 1920's. After his death in the late 1990’s, a nonprofit organization was formed to save the farm from being sold and to carry out Ken’s vision of establishing a carriage museum.
The all-volunteer Board of Trustees had the historic 1959 indoor riding arena renovated to create the Skyline Farm Carriage Museum which is dedicated to educating people about the history of carriage and sleigh driving, an important part of the development of transportation before the automobile era. This small museum boasts two exhibits a year, drawing from its collection of more than 125 carriages and sleighs, and invites school groups, historical societies, antique car clubs, and the public in general to come learn about the role these vehicles played during this era.
Because most of the farm’s fifty-four acres has been preserved, equine members can bring carriages and sleighs to life during driving events throughout the year. Skyline Farm hosts a wide variety of community events, including Sleigh Day and Plow Day; 5K trail run using Skyline’s 1.5 mile trail network; and Harvest Dinner featuring vegetables grown on the property.
