When it was built in 1755, the Tate House was considered a large and elegant home situated in the Stroudwater section of what later became the city of Portland, ME. The house was constructed for Captain George Tate (1700-1794) and his family who had arrived in the Colonies around 1751. Tate was the Senior Mast Agent, overseeing the cutting and shipping of white pines back to England for the use of the British Navy. The Tate House Museum has been preserved by the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Maine and is a National Historic Landmark open from June through October.
