The original Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington Railway ran under various ownership from 1894 until 1933 when the railway closed due to a derailment and deferred maintenance. The railway was scrapped in 1937 and would’ve been largely forgotten. Luckily a few enthusiastic early railway preservationists stepped in at that time to save remnants of the original railway, though the railway was torn up and the majority of the equipment was scrapped.

In 1989 the nonprofit Wiscasset, Waterville, & Farmington Railway museum was founded. Museum members gathered surviving elements of the original railway and arranged their return for preservation and restoration. Since then we’ve reconstructed over 2.5 miles of the original railway, restored several pieces of equipment and built replicas of many structures.

Today, the WW&F Railway Museum enjoys the support of over 1,000 members and enthusiastic volunteers who build, restore, and maintain our equipment. This exciting railway reconstruction project continues today operating in much the same way as the original railway using steam locomotives and traditional construction and operation methods. New equipment, buildings, and track are always being constructed, so a visit to the museum is a constantly evolving experience.

When visiting the museum you can take a ride back through time aboard a steam train. You can also “try your hand” at operating a handcar, or ride aboard a converted Ford Model T railcar. Our station, and other reconstructed buildings are open to the public for you to explore and learn more about narrow gauge railroading in Maine. Special events also are held throughout the year featuring music, activities, and fun for the whole family.

If the idea of working on a railroad as it was at the turn of the century was appeals to you, or simply enjoy working with your hands, join us for one of our work weekends. These weekends, which take place each Spring and Fall allow people of all ages to come together and take part in the reconstruction and restoration projects at the railway. No special expertise is required, just a willingness to help. Lunch and Dinner are provided on site for volunteers as a thank you for their efforts.

We are conveniently located just 10 minutes off of Route 1 in historic Alna, Maine- easily accessible from the Portland, Midcoast, and Augusta areas.
