Warhol & Mapplethorpe: Guise & Dolls

This exhibit focuses on several prominent bodies of work from each artist’s oeuvre: Warhol’s “Ladies and Gentlemen” series (1975) of drag queen portraits, Christopher Makos’s “Altered Images” series of Warhol in drag, Mapplethorpe’s photographs of lifelong friend and longtime muse Patti Smith that range from masculine to feminine, and Mapplethorpe’s photographic series and book Lady: Lisa Lyon (1983) of the female bodybuilding champion in numerous gender-bending guises. Androgynous and cross-dressing subjects, including Bob Colacello, Candy Darling, and Grace Jones will supplement the series. The exhibition showcases approximately 100 works of art including paintings, photographs, Polaroids, prints and video.

On view through January 24, 2016 Location: The Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, CT

The View Out His Window (and in his mind’s eye): Photographs by Jeffery Becton

Jeffery Becton is a photographer and image-maker who lives on Deer Isle, a rocky and forested island off the coast of Maine. Becton makes work, in part, about his surroundings. The extraordinary sweeping coastal views that are such a part of daily life when one lives by the sea are often incorporated into his images. Equally critical is internal life, both the space inside the home (and the comfort and protection it provides from northern New England’s inclement weather), and the introspective and contemplative space that enlivens one’s imagination, and is no doubt encouraged in this stunning and remote location.

WALLS Evolves: Expanding a Living Collection

WALLS (Williams Art Loan for Living Spaces) is growing and new works of art are on our walls. Through a student-led project, recently acquired prints, drawings, and photographs are on view in an exhibition that brings the acquisition process to the fore. Visit the galleries to see what’s new and cast your vote for other possible acquisitions. The works that get top votes will be added to the WALLS collection and sent out with students in the spring.
