For our Winter Quick Take poll, we asked "What is the biggest hurdle to offering accessibility and compliance with ADA laws at your museum?"
The largest proportion of respondents, 29.51%, responded that cost is the biggest hurdle to being ADA compliant, followed by 21.3% who said ADA is inappropriate for their institution. Several of the respondents mentioned that historic structures limits their compliance. 14.75% said that a lack of knowledge is a hurdle in being ADA compliant. 33.3% of the respondents were from history museums, followed by 28.33% from art, and 20% from historic houses.
61.54 % of respondents that ADA requirements are inappropriate for their institution are from historic houses and/or buildings. This raises an important question – what can historic buildings/houses do to become more accessible and still retain the historic structure?
